Back Rank Mate Chess Puzzles
A back-rank mate happens when a king trapped on its own first or eighth rank — usually behind its own pawns, with no escape square — gets checkmated by a rook or queen delivering check straight along that rank. It's one of the most common ways games are decided once a king castles and never moves again.

Understanding Back Rank
The classic warning sign is a king with no legal escape squares along its back rank, and none of its own pieces able to block or capture the checking piece. Before checkmating, make sure any potential blocking or capturing defenses are accounted for — a back-rank mate that misses a defender's resource isn't mate at all.
