Understanding Chess Engine Evaluations

An evaluation is the engine's estimate of who stands better, and by how much — always shown from White's perspective: a positive number favors White, a negative number favors Black.

  • -1.50 — Black is better by about a pawn and a half.
  • #3 — White has a forced checkmate in 3 moves.

The first kind of number — a centipawn evaluation — is measured in hundredths of a pawn (100 = one pawn) and reflects material and positional factors, not a guaranteed outcome. The second kind — a mate evaluation — only appears once the engine has found a forced sequence leading to checkmate, and the number is a plain count of moves, not a score.
